Photos: Readers share damage from Monday’s storm

High winds and torrential rain from a powerful storm on Monday caused three deaths, widespread damage, and left many homes without power across the state.

A powerful storm ravaged Massachusetts and neighboring states on Monday, causing at least three deaths and widespread damage to homes, cars, and businesses.

The storm, which was reminiscent of a New England summer storm, struck the region from the south amid unseasonably warm temperatures just a week before Christmas.

Wind gusts over 70 mph were reported in some parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton. These winds were strong enough to uproot large trees and topple telephone poles and traffic signals.

The National Weather Service also saw nearly five inches of rain in parts of the state, prompting them them to issue a severe storm warning due to the increased risk of flooding rivers and coastal flooding.

Greater Boston, the South Shore and the North Shore of Massachusetts were hit particularly hard, with over 120,000 homes losing power, mostly in Norfolk, Bristol, and Plymouth counties.
